Facts about domestic violence and sexual assault: |
- An estimated 3 to 4 million women experience partner abuse each year. Battery is the single most common cause of injury to women.
- Partner abuse occurs in families from all economic, educational, religious, and cultural backgrounds.
- Children from violent homes suffer severe emotional trauma. Children are abused in approximately 50% of violent households.
- One in four women and one in seven men will be sexually assaulted before the age of 18.
- A case of sexual violence is reported to law enforcement every seven hours.

If you've experienced domestic violence:

If possible, leave before the violence begins.

Develop an escape plan.

Keep important papers together in a safe place to take with you when you make an exit. Important paper include: drivers license, social security cards, medical records, bank information.

Call 911 or Safe Homes, Inc.

Seek medical attention if needed.
If you've experienced sexual violence:

Call 911, local law enforcement, or Safe Homes.

Seek medical help within 72 hours. Do not douche, change clothes, shower/bathe, or destory any evidence of the attack.

Try to remember all details about the attacker

Request testing for pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases.

You can now request a sexual assault examination in all Kansas hospitals without having to report the crime to law enforcement. | |
